01-05-2008 : Record for Mallorca

The underwater electricity cables that are to stretch from Mallorca to Ibiza may enter the Guinness Book of Records if the project uses three-phase cables with an alternating electrical connection; the type of cable has yet to be decided. The cables will stretch 120 kilometres between Mallorca and Ibiza and will be buried at a maximum depth of 700 metres, the connection will run from Santa Ponsa on the south west coast of Mallorca to Ibiza town. The project is planed for completion by the end of 2007 or early 2008

The number of British people living in the Balearics has doubled in the past ten years, while the number of Germans living here has for the first time in recent history decreased, according to the National Statistical Office (INE), which has revealed that 13.7 percent of the total Balearic population are foreigners. There are now more British people living on Mallorca than in recent years, mostly residing in Calvia, Palma de Mallorca and Pollensa. The statistical results show that the number of British residents in Mallorca has increased from 4.721 in 1996 to 9.575 in 2003.
